A mod for the fheroes2 engine

Command the army.
Skip the map.

A battle-focused expansion of the open-source Heroes of Might and Magic II engine — hand-crafted tactical duels, six story campaigns, a built-in campaign editor, and browser-based online co-op. No kingdom management. Just the fight.

Built on fheroes2 · requires original HoMM II assets or the free demo data.

What's inside

Three ways to do battle

Everything lives under a new Battle Campaigns hub on the main menu — all of it data-driven, so new content drops in as editable text files with no recompile.

⚔️

Challenge Ladder

Build-your-own-army puzzles. Beat each fight under a gold budget, a unit-count cap, and a restricted roster.

  • Pick your stacks from a limited pool
  • Fight by hand, or watch the AI attempt it
  • Progress saved per challenge
🛡️

Faction Campaigns

Six 10-level story gauntlets — one per faction. A fixed army, no hero of your own to lean on, enemies stronger on paper every step.

  • Manual tactics only — no auto-resolve
  • Point-buy commander before each fight
  • Boss heroes lead the final battle
  • Objectives: survive, protect, or decapitate
🗺️

Custom Campaigns

A full in-game designer. Set both armies per level, terrain, objectives and bosses, then share the campaign as a plain text file.

  • Visual army + level editor
  • Up to 10 levels, all six factions
  • Drop a .txt in your data folder to play it

Faction Campaigns

Six factions. Six stories.

Each campaign hands you that faction's tier 2–6 upgraded roster at ten weeks of growth, then escalates the odds across ten hand-tuned levels.

Knight

The Knight's Path

against the vampire lords

A holy order marches into an undead tide — bandits give way to vampires and bone dragons.

Sorceress

The Whitewood Wardens

the blightwood arc

Grand Elves and unicorns hold the wood against corrupted beasts and warlock legions.

Blood of the Clans

unite, then conquer

A warlord binds the rival clans, then wars on a lowland wizard enclave of golems and titans.

The Ashen Ascendancy

from the Cinderwaste

Hydras and red dragons burn through the green kingdoms — until a rival Dragon Master answers.

The Sundered Codex

the wards have failed

A stolen codex looses the elementals; a Titan-heavy enclave stands against every power at once.

The Deathless Crown

the risen lich-lord

The dead war on the living, from village militia to a crusader church and a grand coalition.

Play a battle together, in the browser

No installs, no accounts. The host runs the full engine in their browser and streams the game screen over a peer-to-peer connection; the guest joins with a short room code and sends their input back.

  1. Host opens the web version and picks Host Battle — the engine boots straight into a battle.
  2. A 6-character room code appears. Share it with your opponent.
  3. Guest opens the same page, hits Join, and types the code — no engine download on their side.
  4. You're connected peer-to-peer. Shared screen, take turns commanding the field.

A shared-session co-op experience (both players see the same screen), not competitive hidden-information play. Only the host loads the engine with their own Heroes II data — the guest just streams the picture and needs no game files at all. The persistent, self-hosted P2P build is on the roadmap.

Host streams · Guest controls · WebRTC peer-to-peer

Download & play

What you download here is the engine only — the modded fheroes2 program. It contains none of the original game's data. Two quick steps and you're in.

Step 1 — Grab the engine

Step 2 — Add your Heroes II game files

The engine needs the original Heroes of Might and Magic II data. Pick whichever you already have:

💿

Own the original

Point the engine at your existing copy — buy it on GOG or the Ubisoft Store. First launch walks you through it.

🎮

Use the free demo data

No copy? The engine includes a script that fetches the officially free HoMM II demo assets — enough to jump straight into the battle modes.

Why the two steps? The original Heroes of Might and Magic II and all its art, maps and music are the property of their rights holders. This project ships none of that copyrighted data — you supply your own legally-obtained copy (or the free demo). The engine and this mod are open source under the GNU GPL v2.
